Day signal
Day signal
A day signal is a type of signal that is sent from one boat to another during the day when it is light - regardless of whether the boat is underway, at anchor or has run aground. The day signal is used to show the boat's operational status. The purpose of a dawn signal is to avoid collision between boats. If you have a boat under 7 meters, you do not need to use day signals, but boats over 7 meters must do so. This means that you - if, for example, you are at anchor - must carry a so-called anchor ball.
Some of the most common dawn signals are:
Anchor ball (or anchor ball): the boat is at anchor.
Downward pointing cone: the boat is under sail and has the engine running.
Diamond-shaped signal: the boat is towing another boat, or being towed.
Two cones pointing towards each other: the boat is fishing
